Ever felt that dull ache in your shoulders after a long day at your desk or the tightness in your back after a workout? For many people, pain, stiffness, and stress are part of everyday life. That’s where registered massage therapy can make a real difference, especially one close by here in Burnaby, and when combined with care from a chiropractor, it creates a well-rounded plan to help you move better and feel better.

Understanding Registered Massage Therapy

Registered massage therapy (RMT) is more than just a relaxing spa treatment. It is a regulated health service provided by a massage therapist who has completed formal education and licensing in British Columbia. An RMT is trained to treat muscles, tendons, ligaments, and other soft tissues to relieve pain, improve movement, and support recovery from injury. Because they are regulated professionals, RMTs must follow high standards of practice, giving you safe and effective care every time.

The Difference Between RMT and Chiropractic Care

Many people in Burnaby search for a reliable chiropractor when dealing with back pain, but aren’t sure how massage therapy fits into the picture. There is overlap between the two, particularly in the issues they treat. The main difference comes down to the methods they use, and how they each provide treatment: chiropractic care focuses on joints and spinal alignment, while RMT works on muscles and soft tissues. When used together, they complement each other beautifully. Massage therapy prepares the muscles, making chiropractic adjustments more effective and longer-lasting.

How RMT Can Help You

Massage therapy isn’t just for occasional pampering. It has measurable benefits for a wide range of conditions.

Pain Relief: Regular RMT sessions can ease tension headaches, lower back pain, and postural discomfort.

Better Flexibility and Mobility: Loosening tight muscles helps improve your range of motion and makes movement easier.

Stress and Anxiety Reduction: The calming effect of massage helps lower stress hormones and promote better sleep.

Injury Recovery: Whether from sports, work, or accidents, RMT supports faster healing by improving circulation and reducing inflammation.

Improved Posture: By addressing muscle imbalances, massage therapy helps support better alignment, especially when paired with chiropractic care.

What to Expect from a Massage Therapy Session

Your first visit starts with a consultation where the therapist reviews your health history, discusses your goals, and performs a thorough assessment. During treatment, you will be comfortably positioned and draped for privacy while the therapist applies hands on techniques suited to your needs — whether that’s gentle relaxation work or deep tissue therapy. Afterward, they may recommend stretches, exercises, or follow-up sessions to maintain progress.

Is RMT Right for You?

Almost anyone can benefit from the massage therapy Burnaby residents rely on, whether you spend long hours at a desk, are recovering from an injury, or simply want to reduce stress. It is especially helpful if you are already seeing a chiropractor, since combining the two approaches often speeds up results.

Your Next Step Toward Relief

Registered massage therapy is a safe, effective way to reduce pain, improve mobility, and support overall well-being. When paired with chiropractic care, it gives you a complete plan for lasting relief. If you’re ready to experience the benefits for yourself, book an appointment with Burnaby Heights Chiropractic. Our RMT and chiropractor work together to create a treatment plan tailored to you — so you can get back to living pain-free.

While Sciatic nerve pain can have a number of different causes, a lot of times you can find some relief by stretching and mobilizing your spine. The following three stretches are a great place to start. However, as with any therapy, if these stretches cause any aggravation of your pain, you should stop immediately.

When your sciatic nerve becomes irritated, it can leave you with feelings of burning, stinging, shooting pains, or even weakness through your buttocks down to your affected leg. Having poor posture and a lack of mobility in the spine are two common factors that often contribute to sciatica.

The good news is that you can try some sciatic pain relief treatments in the comfort of your own home by doing several types of exercises and stretches. These can help mobilize the joints of the spine, stretch tight postural muscles, and help to relieve pressure on the sciatic nerve to help reduce any pain.

As well, it is always a good idea to consult your healthcare provider before you try any of these sciatica pain relief exercises.

Lying Glute Stretch

This type of stretch will lengthen the piriformis and gluteal muscles, and may help relieve pressure on your sciatic nerve. To start, you will need to lie flat on your back with your knees bent to roughly ninety degrees. Then raise one foot and bring it to the opposite knee, resting your ankle on your knee. Grasp the underside of the thigh which has your ankle resting on the knee with your hands, and gently begin pulling both legs towards your chest while still keeping the ankle on the knee. Keep your spine depressed flat against the floor. Hold this position for 30 seconds while taking deep breaths, then repeat the same on the other side. Perform this stretch three times on each side.

Extension Exercise (Press Ups)

This exercise can be helpful to alleviate sciatic pain that originates due to a disc bulge in the lower back. You start by laying on your stomach with your elbows bent at the sides, and your hands held palms pressed down on the floor under your shoulders. Slowly raise your chest upwards by pressing down on the forearms and elbows while you arch your lower back, trying to keep your hips down on the floor. Try to raise up as far as you can and hold the position for 20 to 30 seconds while taking steady, even breaths. You can repeat this stretch up to 5 times, three or four times per day.

Seated Lumbar Twist

This is another stretch for sciatica that can also help relieve tightness and pain in the buttocks. Begin by sitting on a mat or the carpet with your legs extended out in front of you and your hands flat on the mat behind your hips to help support you. Bend your left leg to bring your left heel up near the opposite side of the right knee. Now bring your right arm around to place your right elbow gently against your left knee, turning your torso to the left while doing so. Use your right elbow on your left knee with your left hand on the floor behind you, to gently push yourself further into the rotation. Hold for a slow count of ten and gently release. Repeat this on both sides.

If you have any questions about what stretches would be appropriate for your specific situation when dealing with sciatic pain, don’t hesitate to contact Dr Eaton and burnaby Heights Chiropractic.

Not only does a professional massage feel good, it comes with several health benefits as well. While massage therapy is a great way to unwind, it can do a lot more than just help with relaxation.

The following benefits may come as a surprise, but massage therapy is great for your overall health because it:

Helps reduce the number of headaches and migraines you experience, and in many cases, helps to eliminate them completely. Massage therapy can be used as a form of treatment because a professional and registered therapist will know exactly what pressure points they need to work on to alleviate the tension that causes your headaches. The next time you have a migraine and want to reach for medication, consider getting a massage instead because the results will surprise you. At the very least, you’ll see that the frequency of your headaches has been reduced, so it’s well worth it.

Helps treat digestive disorders, such as constipation, irritable bowel syndrome and Crohn’s disease. These conditions are difficult and frustrating to deal with but massage therapy will help. Massage therapists can focus on the affected areas and through massage can help stimulate movement of the digestive tract. This spontaneous movement will not only help with these disorders it will also reduce symptoms like cramping, bloating and gas and help you feel more comfortable.

Helps improve your sleep, which is very important for a person’s health. If you have trouble sleeping at night, a massage will help you eliminate the stress that can be affecting your ability to close your eyes and get some rest. Insomnia makes it difficult to function and will ruin your day because a lack of sleep causes a person to be short tempered and groggy. By targeting your stress points, a massage therapist will help restore a healthy sleep pattern so that you can get the proper rest than every person requires.

These are just three of the many health benefits that massage therapy provides and there are countless others. It’s much more than a relaxing experience and in addition to the fact that it feels good, a massage can help with so much more, resulting in a healthier and happier version of yourself.
