Stretching and massage are excellent techniques to preserve and improve your muscle’s flexibility, release tension, and speed up the healing process after an injury. If you’ve been hurt or if your muscles are tight because they’ve constricted from lethargy and atrophy, both treatments can assist in improving your circulation, blood flow, and recovery for your muscles, ligaments and tendons.

By providing your muscles with a decent stretch, you’re improving their function by giving the targeted muscle group an improved range of motion to contract and expand during exercise. Stretched muscles are less likely to suffer excruciating spasms, cramps, scar tissue, and incorrect posture-compensating movement patterns.

Massage therapy, like you find with our registered massage therapist here at Burnaby Heights Chiropractic, works to improve the functioning of your muscles so that you reduce your risk of injury by having a musculoskeletal system that moves the way it should. How do stretching and massage therapy help to maintain the health of your muscles and joints?

How Massage Therapy Works

Massage refers to various techniques of applying pressure to tense muscle groups and tendons to facilitate blood flow, relaxation, pain reduction, and healing. A person either remains still or performs specific guided movements while a massage therapist exerts pressure on the targeted area, helping to release tightly contracted muscle, relieve pain, and add renewed nutrient-rich blood to the tissue to help it rebuild and recover at the cellular level. Here at Burnaby Heights Chiropractic, the entire body may be worked on during a general massage therapeutic process, but more often treatments will be tailored to target specific problematic areas.

Massage techniques can range from a light touch to intense pressure. Some people find it works best when done immediately following a demanding workout, helping to soothe sore muscles and relieve pulls or strains. Others may need a little time to let their bodies “settle down” a bit before a treatment. Amid a hectic work week, massaging can also offer much needed stress relief and endorphins release as a way to manage constant performance pressure work work and life in general.

How Stretching Works

Like massage, assisted stretching uses an external force to improve muscle tension and relieve stiffness. While assisted stretching may resemble massage in a few ways, its primary goal is to improve flexibility..

A therapist extends your muscle groups during treatment until the ligaments and muscles are stretched slightly beyond their typical range of motion. This will help to prepare the body to contract and expand with greater range and greater elasticity, helping to prevent strains and cramps.

As you become older, your muscle mobility and efficiency may become unbalanced. As time passes, you’ll also discover that your capacity to move joints comfortably declines. Long-term structural instabilities and mobility restrictions could result from all these problems, accumulating into significant discomfort. Regular assisted stretching can improve flexibility and relieve muscle tension, improving the body’s biomechanical efficiency for everyday movement.

Benefits of Massage and Stretching

Massage therapy can encourage healthy blood circulation, reduce stress, and release tight muscles, while stretching is the technique to go if you wish to extend your range of movement and prevent strains, cramps and other injuries.

What is the best option for mobility, then? If flexibility or elasticity are your primary concerns, most specialists would advise stretching combined with massage. In light of this, combining stretching and massage therapy at Burnaby Heights Chiropractic is an excellent solution for long-term structural stability. Here are some pointers for beginning with both:

Benefits of Massage Therapy

The advantages of massage for flexibility and movement are listed below.

Massage is a treatment method that passively relaxes muscles by manual touch, vibration, or oscillation.

New, nutrient- and oxygen-rich blood is delivered to the area being massaged, naturally improving circulation. Your overall health and your body’s functioning can benefit from this in turn.

Sometimes it can be challenging to maintain flexibility and skill due to trigger points. This happens because as you move during the day, knots can tighten up in the muscle and prevent you from moving naturally and comfortably. The astonishing thing is that a massage, particularly a trigger point massage, can help loosen these tight areas, so you can move more easily and comfortably.

Benefits Of Stretching

Stretching has numerous advantages; many health professionals advise including it in your regimen at least a few times each week. The following are some ways in which stretching might improve your maneuverability:

Although muscle stiffness can occur at any time, it is more prevalent following a strenuous workout or recent surgery. Additionally, you might experience tightness or stiffness more often as you age.

Stretching helps reduce and avoid stiffness in overworked, exhausted muscles. This is because it causes the muscle fibres to lengthen momentarily, which can reduce tension, stimulate the muscles and tendons before action, and promote flexibility in general.

Stretching enhances the range of movement in the joints, according to research. Stretching can also improve your strain resistance, enabling you to move your muscles with a greater range of motion while reducing potential strain.

Cons Of Stretching

While stretching can have many tremendous advantages, there can also be drawbacks. For instance:

You’ll want to be careful not to overextend because doing so may result in minor muscle strains. Remember to move carefully, pay attention to your body, and stop if you feel too much pressure.

Stretching requires effort and involvement. You must develop strategies for maintaining your motivation and dedication to your routine to benefit from daily extension fully.

Verdict: Massage Therapy vs Stretching

Your body can experience far more optimal movement patterns, overall health, and relaxation when you combine massage therapy with stretching and rehabilitation.

Your flexibility and full range of motion will improve with regular stretching, whether done daily or once a week. Additionally, a massage helps ease tension—both in mind and body.

You might know this from experience, but being in a car accident can be a very troubling and traumatizing experience for a person to go through. Motor vehicle accidents often cause physical injuries that need a lot of time and treatment to recover from. Going for chiropractic care is one way to help speed up car accident recovery time for you and your loved ones.

Minimizing Car Accident Recovery Time With Chiropractic Care

Due to the physical stress that a car wreck can put someone in, most people look for a chiropractor, or some other type of manual treatment to help speed up their recovery. Chiropractors are licensed primary caregivers, which means that you do not need a referral to see one. When you are in pain or sore after a car accident, you can book an appointment directly with a chiropractor. Here are some examples of chiropractic treatments that can help individuals recover from a car accident injury:

Whiplash Treatment

One common injury that occurs after a car accident is whiplash. In acute stages of whiplash, the focus should be on reducing the inflammation in the neck with things like ice and anti-inflammatory. Some chiropractors will use therapeutic tools like ultrasound or TENS to help with the acute pain their patients are experiencing. Whiplash treatment might also involve manual therapy techniques and gentle stretches.

More than just providing you with hands on treatment for whiplash, chiropractors can also make some recommendations for things you can do on your own to help make your recovery process quicker. For example, a chiropractor could recommend that you start using light neck support or instruct you on how to properly apply an ice pack to help reduce inflammation. Once the pain and inflammation in the neck diminishes, your chiropractor will be much more capable of using spinal manipulation and other techniques to help you restore regular function in the joints in your neck.

Spinal Manipulation

Spinal manipulation is one common treatment performed for whiplash. Spinal manipulation involves using various techniques to induce movement in the joints of the spine to help restore normal function, and reduce pain and inflammation. Three different techniques that are often used to treat patients after a motor vehicle accident are: flexion-distraction, instrument-assisted, and specific spinal manipulation techniques.

Flexion-distraction Technique

This technique uses a hands-on approach, and it will involve slow mobilization of the spine in order to treat discs that are bulging or herniated. Injuring your neck in a car accident can really aggravate a pre-existing disc injury. Your chiropractor will use slow pulling action, or distraction, on the neck to reduce any pain and inflammation from the injured disc.

Instrument-assisted Manipulation

To use this technique, your chiropractor will need a specialized hand-held tool, rather than his hands. They will use the tool to move the joints of the spine. This technique is suitable for older patients who have been in a car accident, and also for patients who suffer from low bone density.

Specific Spinal Manipulation

This is another hands-on technique. Your chiropractor will identify the spinal joints that have abnormal or restricted motion in the joint. They will then use a quick, small thrusting technique to restore normal motion in the joint. This technique effectively restores normal movement to spinal joints, helps stretch soft tissue, and reduce pain and inflammation.

Other Manual Therapies

Other than spinal manipulation, many chiropractors will also use manual therapy to help treat muscles and ligaments that were injured in order to speed up car accident recovery. Examples include therapeutic massage techniques, trigger point therapy, instrument assisted soft tissue therapy and more.

If you have any questions, or are looking for a chiropractor to provide treatment after a car accident, don’t hesitate to contact Dr Eaton at Burnaby Heights Chiropractic. He would be happy to help you out however he can!

Those of us who have desk jobs will experience neck and back pain as a result of sitting in the same position for extended periods of time. Office jobs will often lead to a lack of movement, and this will affect your entire body because it will leave you tired, sore and tense.

The good news is that there are a lot of self-massage techniques you can use to relieve stress and alleviate muscle pain, and if you do these correctly, they can be very effective. The right techniques will help improve blood circulation while increasing mental alertness, so take some time every day to complete the following:

Massage Your Head

Place your thumbs on your cheekbones with your other fingers close to your ears and apply gentle pressure to your temples using your fingertips. Make circles with your fingers and move along slowly towards the center of your forehead until both hands meet and repeat the process to experience relief.

Stretch at Your Desk

If you spend a lot of time typing, you need to move your entire arm to maintain flexibility, and stretching will do this while giving your forearms a break. Stretch your arms up into the air, feel your shoulders stretch, and then take your right arm and clasp your left while maintaining your stretch. Pull slightly to the side, then switch and complete this movement again for another 15 seconds. It’s very important that you move your arms in ways that you normally don’t when you are seated and typing, as this will increase blood flow. It’s also important that you stretch your legs so that they experience movement throughout the day.

Massage Your Neck

Place two fingertips on the back of each side of your neck and apply steady pressure. Hold this position and once you release, slowly roll your shoulders forward and backward, and repeat this process a few times to relieve built-up pressure in your neck.

Massage Your Jaw

A lot of people do not realize the difference this can make, so use your fingertips to press up under your cheekbones and start from the inside and move out toward your temples. As you apply pressure, open and close your mouth, and once you reach your ears, press your thumb under your jawbone and pull your fingertips down the side of your face. Repeat this pulling motion along your jaw, and as you move towards your chin, you will instantly feel relief.

Don’t Forget About Your Knees

Sitting for too long can have a negative impact on your knees, so straighten and relax your legs while seated and gently press the side of your knee with your fingertips or knuckles and work your way around your knee. Bend and straighten your leg a few times and repeat the process with your other leg.

While these simple massage techniques can help make a world of difference, you may still want a professional massage. Contact us today at Burnaby Heights Chiropractic to find out more about our services, and we will gladly schedule an appointment!

Chiropractors are healthcare professionals who primarily use their hands to manipulate the spine and joints of the body via a variety of techniques, in order to relieve pain and help restore normal function in their patients bodies. Chiropractic is based on theories that the body will be able to heal better once the musculoskeletal system, especially the spine, is working and moving properly.

Joint manipulation, or adjustments, help to restore mobility to stiffened or injured joints, reduce pain, and accelerate the normal healing process. So, many people visit chiropractors for pain relief related to any issues associated with their back, neck, and joints in the arms and legs. Chiropractors can also help treat headaches and other conditions. Here are some of the things chiropractors want you to know about chiropractic care.

Chiropractors Are Licensed Primary Care Givers, Just Like Family Physicians

All across Canada, chiropractors are recognized as primary-level care providers. This means that chiropractors hold their own licenses and can practice independently within their own scope of care, and that you do not need a referral to go see one. They must go to a nationally accredited, four-year doctoral graduate school program. Their curriculum will include a minimum of 4,200 hours of classroom, lab, and clinical internship. They must also meet yearly to continue education requirements to retain their license.

Before Treatment, Chiropractors Will Take A History And Do A Physical Exam

If you think that your chiropractor will be able to jump straight into treatment in your first session, You will be surprised to learn that they will first need to take a thorough history of your complaint and review of your overall medical history, as well as perform a physical exam. This is done for your safety, to make sure that you are getting the correct type of care for the issue that you are dealing with.

Chiropractors Cannot Prescribe Any Medication

Chiropractors are not licensed to write prescriptions of any type. For patients who would benefit from prescription medications, they will typically be referred to a physician. Even though chiropractors cannot prescribe medications, you should expect them to ask you about your medication and supplement history to get a better idea of your overall health and develop a treatment plan, which will not cause other existing conditions to become worse.

Your Chiropractor Will Most Likely Suggest Exercise, Among Other Things

Conventional wisdom has told us to stay off our feet when we have back pain and wait until painkillers and muscle relaxants kick in. However, many patients are surprised when Chiropractors tell them that conventional research has shown that people will heal faster and more completely if they stay active and mobile to the best of their ability while they are recovering from their back injuries. That is why, in most cases, chiropractors will give patients specific instructions on how to stay active in a way that will help them the most.

Your spine will be adjusted during these sessions, and manipulations will be made so that your body can heal. Depending on the severity of your condition or pain, gentle stretches or more intense pressure may be applied.

Chiropractors have the skills and knowledge to deal with your muscles and the nerves that control them. Back pain, headaches, and sports injuries are familiar conditions and can treat them by correcting your body’s structural alignment. This will improve function, and if they see that your alignment is off, they will help you increase your range of motion in your spine and joints to prevent additional health problems and to restore your well-being. In addition to adjustments, chiropractors use other treatments as well, including electrical stimulation, ultrasound, heat and ice, lasers and therapeutic exercises. The goal is to help realign you and promote healing in tissues damaged by structural imbalances.

Chiropractors can do more than just “crack” a patient’s back, and while this treatment can be very beneficial, there are certain situations where medication or surgery may be a better option. Chiropractic treatment is not appropriate for broken bones, dislocations, infections, cancer or tumours, or osteoporosis. As well, if you suffer from any visceral conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, asthma, or any chronic degenerative diseases like Parkinsons or multiple sclerosis, you should seek traditional medical treatment for those conditions rather than chiropractic care. Seeking chiropractic treatment if you have some of these conditions may be more than just ineffective, it may be quite harmful.

It’s important that you understand when chiropractic care is beneficial and when it is not, because this will help you find the right treatment to help with your specific condition. In some cases, even if the condition itself cannot be treated by a chiropractor, you will still be able to see one because their treatments can be done alongside traditional medical care, and may be beneficial in treating joint and muscle symptoms you are also experiencing as a part of something else. Chiropractic care is more than just spinal manipulation, and you will receive advice on healthy habits like exercise and nutrition as well. You can improve your lifestyle by incorporating chiropractic care as part of a holistic and whole-body approach to your health, which will help you effect a positive change in your well-being and your life.

Chiropractic care can be complementary to other treatments, but it’s important that you discuss your medical history and health issues openly and honestly with your chiropractor so that they are aware of your situation and any conditions you are dealing with. This will allow them to assess you properly, and they will discuss whether or not you are a suitable candidate for this type of care.

At Burnaby Heights Chiropractic we want what’s best for you. We truly care about our clients.

The human body is designed to be very flexible, but as we grow older, we tend to lose that flexibility, especially if we aren’t stretching or being active as regularly, compared to how our bodies were when they were younger. Simple things can become more difficult, like reaching or bending over to pick something up. These things can become more difficult as we age. If you’re like many others and don’t get to exercise regularly, you might notice more stiffness and more flexibility loss than others. What can we do to improve our flexibility, even if we can’t get to the gym regularly?

The answer is quite simple, you should do some stretching exercises that your chiropractor can help you with.

Stretching exercises can be an important part of keeping your body in good shape, and they can be done anywhere and anytime you want. If you have any doubts about the effectiveness of stretching, you can do a bit of research. You will see that stretching is often a part of any physical treatment like chiropractic treatment or type rehabilitative treatment. And of course, athletes understand that they always need to do their stretching before they perform sports.

Today, we’ll look at the different types of stretches and the benefits that come with stretching that will help you feel more flexible and like you have the body you had when you were younger.

Some of the easiest stretching exercises that can be done anywhere can include:

Hamstring stretches

Butterfly groin stretches

Lying hip stretches

Lying quad stretches

Calf stretches

Shoulder stretches

Triceps stretches

And there are many more that your chiropractor can recommend, but starting with the list found above will be a good start.

You can easily find resources, pictures and videos online of how to perform any stretching exercise. As a general rule of thumb, you should start slow. Try out a few different exercises, and then take your time, so you don’t strain your muscles. As you figure out how your body reacts to each type of stretching, you will be able to increase your repetitions and then add more exercises gradually to build up a regular routine. And don’t forget that even if you are really busy, you can still do these even while you sit at your desk at work.

Some benefits of stretching exercises can include:

Increased flexibility. By completing stretches regularly, your flexibility will increase, and you will be able to do all the things that you used to be able to do when you were younger, without suffering from any aches and pains. As you continue to stretch your muscles, you will become more accustomed to those movements that were difficult.

More range of movement. Once your body starts to loosen up your range of motion will greatly improve. You will be able to bend, squat, turn and reach much easier, and your head and neck will turn easily as well.

There is a huge likelihood that you have experienced a muscle knot at least once in your life. According to research, muscle knots affect as much as eighty-five percent of the population. Not only do they impair mobility and cause pain, but can also affect a person’s quality of life. To learn more about muscle knots and how to provide relief, keep reading this blog post.

What are Muscle Knots?

Muscle knots or myofascial trigger points are stiff bands of muscle. They have a trigger point, which is the hard knob in the centre, and are usually found in your back, shoulders, and neck. The pain can occur in two different manners: active and latent. The former takes place when the pain shoots up randomly, while the latter occurs after the trigger point is pressed. But in all cases, muscle knots will lead to pain that will radiate past the trigger point and into the surrounding muscles.

What Causes Muscle Knots?

Muscle knots occur due to a variety of possible causes. Although this area requires more research, the best available evidence reveals that muscle knots are the result of overuse, like heavy lifting or repetitive activities, for example. Other causes may include the following: psychological stress, poor ergonomics, bad posture, fatigue, dehydration, unhealthy eating habits, sleep disturbances, and joint problems.

What are the Symptoms of Muscle Knots?

One of the main symptoms of muscle knots is pain. Since everyone’s tolerance towards pain is different, your symptoms may vary from others. Even so, the majority of people have described muscle knots to feel swollen, tense, or bumpy, and create an aching sensation. Based on the location of the muscle knot, it might seem to cause unrelated pain in other areas of the body. For instance, if you have a muscle knot in the neck, it can send pain to the base of the skull, which will result in a tension headache.

Who is Most At-Risk for Muscle Knots?

There is a very small group of people who will carry on their life without ever having to experience a muscle knot. On the other hand, 97% of people who deal with chronic pain have trigger points, and 100% of those who suffer from neck pain have them. Although, there are certain risk factors that increase the chances of developing muscle knots, like ageing, disease, and stress.

How are Muscle Knots Diagnosed?

A physical examination needs to be conducted in order to diagnose a muscle knot. This has to be done by an experienced professional or chiropractor. The affected region will be assessed for three things: a taut band of muscle, a tender nodule, and the patient’s reaction to physical pressure.

How are Muscle Knots Treated?

There are several available options that can help deal with muscle knots. The most well-known treatments include stretching, chiropractic, acupuncture, exercise, massage therapy, and ultrasound therapy. The main goal for all of these treatments is the same – to reduce pain and increase mobility by releasing the trigger point and breaking up the knotted tissue.

How Can You Prevent Muscle Knots?

Muscle knots occur due to overuse, stress, bad posture, fatigue, etc. For that reason, your chances of experiencing a muscle knot can be lowered by simply resting, fixing posture and improving lifestyle habits. Here are some tips that are worth giving a try:

Improve Your Posture – Sit in a relaxed position without slouching. Keep your shoulders back and down.

Take Breaks – Look for the chance to have some downtime throughout the day. You can either rest or exercise – but do not overdo it by lifting extremely heavy objects. If your job requires you to lead a sedentary work life, take the chance to have stretch breaks to prevent your muscles from becoming too tight.

Maintain a Healthy Diet – Incorporate calcium, potassium, and magnesium into your diet, and keep your body hydrated by drinking a lot of water.

Can You Treat Muscle Knots at Home?

Even though it is strongly recommended to seek advice from a professional spine, muscle, and nervous system expert, there are some instances where you can massage the sore muscles on your own. Consider following these simple steps:

Locate the knot in your muscle

Use your fingers to gently massage it

Loosening the tight muscle by pressing down and making small circles

Tip: If you are experiencing difficulty with reaching the muscle knot, try using a tennis ball or foam roller, and apply pressure by slowly and gently moving it in back and forth motions

Muscle knots are very painful and frustrating, and can take away from comfortably living your life. Now that you know what causes them, and how to treat them, you can hopefully find relief and resume your everyday activities. However, if you do have a persistent muscle knot, make an appointment with a registered chiropractor at Burnaby Heights Chiropractic. We have practitioners in both fields: our chiropractor, Dr. Forest Eaton and Registered Massage Therapist, Tim Gropen. We will listen to your concerns to understand your condition, then we will provide you with a diagnosis and will apply the right treatment based on your specific needs.

In addition to reducing pain, some other services that we offer include the following: reducing muscle spasms, correcting dysfunction in your musculoskeletal system, encouraging flexibility, and improving joint motion. We can also help treat many different areas such as lower back pain, foot pain, shoulder pain, neck pain, sciatica, arthritis, headaches, poor posture and more.

Chiropractors see several patients each day. Each patient comes into the office with their own unique and specific health goals in mind, and it is a chiropractors job to help those patients meet those health goals. Whether it is preventative treatment, acute pain management, or restorative adjustments, these are the 5 most common issues that chiropractors treat.

Lower back pain

The nagging pain in your lower back that you have had for months and it is making pretty much everything uncomfortable; the sharp jab of pain in your lower back that you just woke up with, that makes getting out of bed difficult… Lower back pain of one sort or another is the most common reason for people to see a chiropractor. Determining the root cause of the lower back pain is an essential step to effectively treating the issue. Once they determine the cause, your chiropractor will develop a plan of action which could involve various types of treatment, all with the goal of relieving your lower back pain as best they can.

Neck pain

Chiropractors also frequently see patients with neck pain, which could be caused by something as innocuous as time spent looking down at a phone screen, to something as significant as whiplash from a motor vehicle accident. By uncovering the source for discomfort, be it nerve, joint, disk, or muscle related, a chiropractor will make the necessary adjustments and deliver the best treatment they can to mitigate your symptoms and help restore your normal functioning.

Sciatic nerve pain

If you’ve ever sat for an extended amount of time, especially with a wallet or set of keys in your back pocket, you may be no stranger to pain that radiates down one or both of your legs. An sciatic nerve with compromised function may cause this pain, and this compromise may be coming from a variety of places. Treating this pain is reliant on
proper recognition of the cause. Without appropriate treatment, you are likely to experience prolonged or recurrent symptoms. This is another issue that chiropractors are very often able to help people with.

Headaches

Did you know headaches and migraines may have a lot to do with the functioning of your back, and in particular your neck? Tension headaches are often caused by muscular tightness at the back of the neck, which is directly associated with dysfunction and irritation of the joints in your neck. Migraine headaches are frequently triggered by irritation and inflammation of the joints at the very top of your neck, where your skull attaches. These are both issues that a chiropractor will see on a regular basis. Their treatments help those patients reduce the severity and frequency of those headaches, often to a very significant degree.

Shoulder and knee pain

When people think of chiropractors, they typically only think about backs. Many are unaware of the great work a chiropractor can do on the knees and shoulders! Knee pain might be caused by hip and lower back issues, while shoulder pain can often originate in the neck. Constant uneven weight distribution, habits of posture and movement,
repetitive work tasks, and even old injuries that are long in the past can all play a role in the development of knee and shoulder issues, which is why a chiropractor will always ask lots of questions on your first visit. This information leads to a better understanding of the nature of these complaints and will result in more effective treatment of these
commonly seen complaints.
Most often, visiting a chiropractor is not a one-and-done kind of thing. Maintaining a healthy musculoskeletal system long-term requires regular attention and maintenance, both from your health care team and from yourself! If you are looking for a reliable chiropractor in the Burnaby area look no further than Dr Forest Eaton at Burnaby Heights Chiropractic!

Everyone knows that massage therapy is great for soothing chronic pain, injuries, muscle soreness and more, but can it improve your mental health as well? That’s what we’re going to find out as we dive into the emotional benefits of massage therapy.

Improves Relaxation

The more your body fully relaxes, the lower your heart rate, blood pressure, salivary cortisol and oxygen consumption decrease. This is helpful in lowering stress, anxiety and depression. Seeing a registered massage therapist doesn’t have to take up a large part of your day. To experience the relaxation that comes from a massage, you only need to see a professional for 10 to 15 minutes according to multiple studies. You can easily fit a massage into your busy schedule, and for enhanced results, throw some aromatherapy into the mix.

Encourages Full Body Rest

The practice of massage therapy isn’t solely to achieve in-the-moment relaxation. As the treatment has been shown to improve the quality of sleep in everyone from children to the elderly, it’s much more than a relaxation technique. Receiving a massage can ease the pain or discomfort resulting from cerebral palsy, fibromyalgia, migraines, insomnia and much more. A 30-minute massage is all you need to improve your sleeping habits and enjoy a pain-free future.

Relieves Symptoms of Chronic Illness

People who suffer from chronic diseases, illnesses or pain may also experience a high level of stress as well. Heightened stress can worsen the symptoms of your chronic condition, which will then cause more stress, creating a painful and draining cycle that never seems to end. Although massage therapy hasn’t been shown to cure the disease or illness itself, the effect it has on reducing stress, in turn, reduces the symptoms you may be experiencing. In cancer patients, massage therapy has been shown to lower side effects like pain, depression and anxiety, improving their mental health and encouraging them to fight on.

Increases Overall Happiness

Experiencing anxiety and depression are some of the most common mental health problems people face. It can negatively impact your life and the lives of those around you. The practice of massage therapy has been consistently shown to decrease depression and anxiety, as well as lower stress levels and reduce irritability. On top of the experience increasing the release of serotonin and dopamine in the brain, a combination that will result in elevating your mood, massage therapy is a natural and non-invasive treatment for a happier self.

At Burnaby Heights Chiropractic, our registered massage therapists are highly trained and passionate about maintaining a relaxing environment for new and returning patients.

Foot pain will affect the way you stand and walk and this type of pain will prevent you from going about your day and completing your daily routine. Foot pain must be addressed so that you can move comfortably again and custom orthotics can help in this regard. They are specially designed to be placed into shoes to help align your foot and ankle bones into the most optimal position. This can help reduce your discomfort and pain significantly, so that you can function more normally.

Custom orthotics are made from various materials and act like an interface between your shoe and your foot. This can reduce stress and strain on your legs and hips whenever you stand, walk or run. They are designed specifically for your own feet, so they will fit into your shoes easily and you will very quickly notice the difference they make, not just to reduce pain, but also fatigue while performing your daily activities. Foam, a 3D scan or plaster cast can all be used to design your custom orthotics, and each method works equally well to produce a custom, one-of-a-kind orthotic just for your feet.

Those who suffer from arch pain, foot pain, back pain, knee pain, bunions or hammertoes can all benefit from custom orthotics. Orthotics play a key role in managing any one of these conditions. Orthotics would also help those whose occupation requires them to stand for long periods of time, as this, too, can lead to foot, knee, hip, and lower back pain. If this is something you are interested in, a chiropractor can help. Their knowledge will help them recognize imbalances in your feet and lower body, and they will recommend custom orthotics accordingly. It’s important that you discuss your issues with your chiropractor so that they can determine whether or not you may benefit from orthotic correction, then they perform a complete biomechanical assessment of your feet and lower body to confirm if you are or are not a suitable candidate for orthotics.

Custom orthotics can help with plantar fasciitis by adding support to the arch of the foot, which helps decrease the stress on the plantar fascia and reduce inflammation and symptoms over time. In many cases, orthotics can eliminate the pain entirely if you suffer from this type of pain. Custom orthotics can also help with Achilles tendonitis by altering the mechanics of your foot and easing the stress on your Achilles tendon, which would help lessen the workload on your Achilles tendon and let inflammation and pain dissipate over time.

Custom orthotics will provide additional comfort and stability to your feet and work with most pairs of shoes so long as they are wide and deep enough to accommodate the device. The bottom line is that custom orthotics can help with foot pain. Burnaby Heights Chiropractic can provide you with more information. Dr Forest Eaton, the chiropractor, has materials and know-how available to cast custom orthotics, and would be happy to talk to you about your feet related issues. Contact us today!
